Make Art Not War Poster
Make Art Not War Poster
Shepard Fairey
This poster features an evocative design by Shepard Fairey, taken from the exhibition Photo Synthesis, which displayed at Fotografiska in the summer of 2024.
This image, created during the Iraq War, is an alternative phrase inspired by the popular anti-war mantra from the 1960s, "Make love, not war." In this case, Fairey emphasizes the need for creative rather than destructive actions. The image's Art Nouveau style is an additional reference to the influence of Art Nouveau on hippie and psychedelic art in the 60s, including many posters against the Vietnam War.
Surrounded by a floral wreath, the female figure appears more confident and real rather than ethereal. The placement of two paintbrushes beneath her portrait not only refers to a classic tool of art production but also resembles spears, which, when read alongside the directive to "obey" displayed on her neck, sharpens the otherwise tasteful message.
