Though this photograph was actually taken in the mid-1920s by his wife, Lucia, it comes as close to the notion of an acceptable self-portrait as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy might have allowed. Standing at a distance from the camera that a conventional head-and-shoulders portrait might dictate, the artist holds up his hand, obscuring part of his face with the blurred image of his palm, at once disrupting the work of the portraitist and creating something quite other. The result is a striking image and an eloquent depiction of both the man and his aesthetic originality.
