A captivating image of the Kötlujökull glacier in Iceland, in expressive black and white, by Ragnar Axelsson. Known for its incredible caves and ice formations, Kötlujökull comes to life through Axelsson’s lens.

For over 40 years, Ragnar Axelsson, also known as Rax (b. 1958), has photographed people, animals, and landscapes in the most remote regions of the Arctic, including Iceland, Siberia, and Greenland. His powerful black-and-white images capture the raw human experience of nature at the edge of the habitable world, highlighting the extraordinary relationships between Arctic inhabitants and their extreme environments—relationships now deeply and complexly affected by unprecedented climate change.

This work is part of the Prix Pictet exhibition, the world's leading award in photography and sustainability, showcased at Fotografiska Stockholm in spring 2024. The goal of this exhibition is to harness the power of photography to spotlight global sustainability, and for 2024, the theme and title of the exhibition is Human. Twelve prominent photographers selected by a jury participate, each exploring humanity and human interactions with the world in their own unique way.
