Starting off professionally as a photojournalist, Schapiro grew from being not only a documentarian, but also a humanitarian and an activist, becoming a highly acclaimed photographer, frequently engaged by world-renowned newspapers and magazines, such as Rolling Stone, Time, Life, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, and Paris Match. Schapiro’s work includes photographic stories linked to the presidential campaign of Robert Kennedy and the Civil Rights movement. He was brought to Memphis, by Life, after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. which resulted in some of the most iconic photographs of this dramatic event.

In the 1970s, Schapiro’s clients included major motion picture companies, for whom he produced advertisements, posters and publicity stills for the films Godfather, The Way We Were, Rambo, amongst others. Through collaborations with musicians Barbra Streisand and David Bowie, Schapiro also created record covers and other related art. His most recent photography series are about India, Music Festivals and Black Lives Matter.

Several monographs of Schapiro’s work have been produced. His photographs have appeared in museum and gallery exhibitions world-wide, as well as represented in private and public collections including the New York Metropolitan Museum and the Getty Museum. Schapiro received the James Joyce Award and fellowship to University College in Dublin.
