Roger Ballen
For over 40 years, Roger Ballen has depicted with strong black and white deeply existential photographs a reality where people and animals are trapped in an incomprehensible and illogical world – an absurd theater. Roger Ballen sees his artistry as an exercise in defining himself. The exhibition at Fotografiska presents over 100 works from the 1970s until today.
During his time as a photographer, Roger Ballen has portrayed a reality where people and animals are stuck in an incomprehensible world where you can be exposed to anything, no matter how illogical it may be. Roger Ballen's photographs depict a tragic reality, devoid of ideals, purity and goals, where the actions of those involved seem futile and absurd. This world is presented in photographs that are not only beautiful. The human comedy is constantly present in his pictures. The exhibition sheds light on man's lot, and Ballen's visual world can perhaps change our way of seeing; both on humanity and on photography.
In the exhibition Theater of the Absurd (2014) at Fotografiska, 105 photographs from the 1970s until today were shown, many of which had never before been exhibited. The presentation also included a site-specific installation of drawings and objects assembled especially for the exhibition.
