This poster reproduction, “Soweto, South Africa”, captures an exuberant and more joyous scene than photographer James Nachtwey is characteristically associated with. The image was made in 1992 while Nachtwey was documenting life conditions in South Africa’s “homeland” townships, the racially prescribed zones of occupancy black and colored peoples were confined to in the era of apartheid. Children who have paid a fee are enjoying a moment on a trampoline.

The figures captured in midair invoke the notion of static instantaneity while representing a sequence of continuous, ongoing movement - an essential aspect of the photographic process and, by extension, Nachtwey’s own documentary calling.
