Arno Rafael Minkkinen
For more than 50 years, Arno Rafael Minkkinen has used nude self-portraits – photographed in natural and urban landscapes – as a way to express the metaphysical experience of being in the world. Minkkinen was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1945, and emigrated to the United States in 1951. After graduating from Wagner College, he began taking his self-portraits in 1970, while working as an advertising copywriter on Madison Avenue.
At the exhibition Two Hundred Seasons at Fotografiska, works by Arno Rafael Minkkinen were shown - photographs taken between 1970 and 2020 in a variety of locations in 30 different countries, including 30 different US states. On this poster we see a black and white photo with the motif of a naked woman's back, with four hugging hands, in front of rocks and sea. The photo was taken at St. Lawrence Island in North America, Alaska.
