Veteran French-born American photographer Elliott Erwitt's work has long demonstrated a quirky sense of the absurd and humorous in the everyday. It is no wonder then that over the decades one of his signature subjects has been dogs, navigating their way through the human world. A dog regularly brings human pretension to heel, showing us our fussy folly in almost any setting, even as they caper comically about exposing and undermining our self importance. For Erwitt, they are catnip.
This poster image of a humorous portrait of an owner and their Yorkie, captured in 1968, has enduring surprise and charm. It's true so, we do come to resemble our canine charges. Or do they resemble us? The greater question here may yet be - was this the face that launched a thousand space-ships? Might a young George Lucas have noted this image? What would you say, Chewbacca?
