Gilleam Trapenberg
Poster featuring a work by Gilleam Trapenberg, from the exhibition Space – A Visual Journey.
Visual artist Gilleam Trapenberg (b. 1991), born and raised in Curaçao, now resides and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In his creative projects, which center around his homeland, he closely examines the social landscape of Curaçao and explores the island's many paradoxes. He looks beyond the depictions and tropes of Caribbean life that dominate (Western) media cycles and uses his camera to create necessary counter-images.
The Caribbean sunset, often depicted in travel agency brochures, is an unavoidable symbol of the entire region. Gilleam Trapenberg’s New Suns began with a dose of chance and became an almost scientific visual experiment—a study of color to inspect a dominant image and give it a new and personal meaning.
In Fotografiska’s major winter exhibition in 2024, Space – A Visual Journey, artistic expression meets scientific discovery, with 13 internationally recognized photographers, each exploring space from their own perspectives.
Throughout history, humanity has gazed at the starry sky, seeking to understand what lies out there. Space represents our ability to stretch the limits of what is possible, the curiosity to discover something new, and the courage to step into the unknown. At the same time, it raises timeless questions about who we are and where we belong in the vastness.
