First Job in America Poster

"First Job in America" is a subject from Diana Markosian's exhibition Santa Barbara, which was shown at Fotografiska Stockholm from March 17 to August 27, 2023.

Photographer and filmmaker Diana Markosian was seven years old when her family gave up their life in Moscow for a new one in California, leaving Markosian's father behind. In the exhibition Santa Barbara, inspired by the TV soap opera of the same name, Markosian now explores her family history through staged photographs and film, where she tries to see everything from her mother's perspective — and understand the sacrifices her mother made for them to become Americans.
