This poster rendition of David LaChapelle’s Death by Hamburger (2001) shows a massively inflated hamburger balloon smothering a woman on the ground. Only the woman’s legs show, dressed in the climbing straps of her white heels and splayed in a gesture of struggle that this woman is allegorised to. Humour kicks in the longer we look at the burger; we know it isn’t real yet our mouths salivate, as if the brimming suffocation this burger inflicts on the woman affects precisely that tactile, metabolic satiety expected from the burger, moving us to salivation. This image is absurd and surreal, serving almost like an advertisement––nay, caution––for Consumption as both Life and Death, Consumption as God.
