C, 2012 Poster

This poster image of the photographer's work, "C, 2012," taken from Fotografiska Stockholm's 2021 show, Introspection, delivers everything that has become distinctive of the artist's widely admired style and sensibility.

The photograph - moody, mysterious, atmospheric - is just a starting point for Ockenfels' continued creative investment. Jettisoning the medium's unrivaled documentary ability, the artist makes it a field for a vigorous graphic engagement - drawing, painting, blotting, and scratching - in a highly expressive gestural style comprising a personalized symbology.

In "C, 2012" a triple rendering of a figure shot is presented serially in various print formats - positive and negative - and with different graphic additions showcasing individual instances of human artistic response. The "cool" eye of the camera lens has been hijacked by an impassioned, graphic hand, and a warring tension is revealed in the final hybrid image. The blotting out of the subjects' eyes and identity introduces an air of mystery, and stirs up a sense of violent emotion. An unease prevails, resulting in an activated composition that feels restless and never at peace.
