A lot of art is boring, 1999 Poster
Frank Ockenfels 3
Our poster image reproduction released for Fotografiska's Introspection exhibition - an overview of the photo artist's work to date - "A Lot of Art is Boring," is plucked from the pages of one of Ockenfels's workman journals - repositories for visual projects, explorations, memos and observations. These notebooks served as the seeding grounds for the evolution of a distinctive style, combining photography, text, collage, hand-drawn elaborations, and graphic mark-making - a "look" that denotes the artist's highly personal vision. The ragged edges here and distressed, worked surface are characteristic, as is the provocative, non-conformist statement. Along with the murky photo fug the print uses, the eclipsing of the subjects' eyes works to create a sense of unease and danger. One would hardly guess that the occluded face behind the text banner hosts the well balanced features of actor Timothy Olyphant.
