Lisa Leone's capture of Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill in their early years as The Fugees - crouching on a rooftop in East Harlem under a dull winter sky - barely hints at the phenomenal success both artists were to achieve, together and separately, within a few short years. The grit - the imposing project building in the background, the chilly indifferent sky - is laced with the lyricism of her subjects - Jean's tender expression as he plucks his guitar; Hill's reflective and alert gaze out of the frame; and something momentous is sounded.
