László Moholy-Nagy
This poster reproduction is of a painting, A 19 (1927), by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Spotlight and shadow play are implicated. The severely restricted palette, the contrasting geometric forms, minimal elements, and dynamic composition are all hallmarks of emergent modernist and constructivist aesthetics of the period. Moholy-Nagy deployed these same features in his photographic works throughout his practice, seeking out unusual perspectives to capture similar forms in his lens. Architectural and engineering structures of the era are where he found them, making use of linear elements and layers of shadow to build remarkably similar compositions as those devised in his paintings and photograms.
